Product Information:
Kubb is a popular lawn game with Viking origins, where players throw wooden batons to knock over wooden blocks, known as "kubbs." It's a mix of strategy, accuracy, and skill.
Actual item may differ slightly from what is pictured.
How to Play Kubb
What You Need:
- 10 kubbs: Rectangular wooden blocks (about 6 x 2 inches).
- 1 king: A larger wooden block, placed in the center.
- 6 batons: Wooden sticks (about 12 inches long) for throwing.
- Field (Pitch): A rectangular playing field, typically 5m x 8m (16 ft x 26 ft), marked by stakes or visible boundaries.
This rental includes everything you need (except for the field--they don't travel well).
Objective:
The goal of Kubb is to knock down all the opposing team’s kubbs (blocks) and then topple the king to win the game.
Setup:
- Field Layout:
- Set up the field with two baselines (the shorter sides of the rectangle).
- Place 5 kubbs evenly spaced along each team’s baseline.
- The king is placed in the center of the field.
- Teams:
- Kubb is typically played with 2 teams, with each team having 1-6 players.
Game Play:
- Throwing Batons:
- Teams take turns throwing the batons underhand to knock over the opposing team’s baseline kubbs. Each player throws two batons per turn (6 batons total for each team).
- Field Kubbs:
- After Team A throws and knocks over some of Team B's kubbs, those knocked-over kubbs (called "field kubbs") are tossed by Team B into Team A’s half of the field. Team A must stand up these kubbs where they land, and now they are "field kubbs."
- Before Team B can target Team A’s baseline kubbs on their next turn, they must first knock down the field kubbs set up in Team A’s half of the field.
- Knocking Down Kubbs**:
- Each team must knock down all of the field kubbs in their opponent's half before they can attack the opponent’s baseline kubbs.
- If a team fails to knock down all the field kubbs in their opponent’s half, the other team gets to throw from the line formed by the nearest standing field kubb, giving them a closer position to throw from in their next turn.
- Winning:
- Once a team has knocked down all of the opponent’s field kubbs and baseline kubbs, they can try to knock down the king. The king must be knocked over **last**.
- The first team to knock over the king after clearing all the kubbs wins.
Rules and Penalties:
- Foul Throws: If a field kubb is thrown out of bounds, the opposing team may place it anywhere on their half of the field.
- King Penalty: If a team knocks over the king before knocking down all the kubbs, they automatically lose the game.
Strategy:
- Kubbs Placement: When throwing knocked-over kubbs into your opponent’s half, try to land them close together to make them harder for the other team to knock down.
- Throwing Accuracy: Focus on knocking down kubbs quickly to reduce the number of targets your opponents have.
Kubb is great for outdoor fun and is often referred to as "Viking Chess" because it combines both strategy and skill!
